Who’s Got Keys To Your Home?

Around 5% of home burglaries occur because the intruder has a key, but how many of us can confidently say we know who has a key to our home?

If you’ve recently moved into a new home, have you thought about who might have keys to your new property – potentially the previous owners or even tenants if it was rented out?

Even if you’ve been in your property for a while, neighbours or friends who have an extra key might not have kept it safe, or you may have forgotten to retrieve a spare key from tradesmen. Similarly, if you’ve ever left a key under the doormat or in a plant pot, it’s possible for someone to make a copy and return it to your hiding place, without you ever knowing it was gone.

For peace of mind, the security experts at Yale recommend that you change part of the lock when you move into a property, and then again every five years. By changing the rim cylinder in your nightlatch, or the euro profile cylinder in a multipoint lock, your home can be secure in minutes, without you having to change the entire lock or door. This is an easy DIY job, as well as an inexpensive one (Yale lock cylinders start from only £10!)

If you have a timber door, you can replace your rim cylinder by simply unscrewing the nightlatch, removing the existing cylinder and replacing with a new one. All rim cylinders are a standard size, so you should be able to replace your existing cylinder easily. And if you have a PVCu or composite door, then you can replace the euro profile cylinder in your multi-point lock by simply unscrewing the cylinder fixing screw and replacing the cylinder with a new one.

And when you replace your cylinder, you may as well spend a little bit more and go for a British Standard version. By upgrading your cylinder to a British Standard one you can be assured that your home has the very latest security protection, for added peace of mind.

In addition to the security benefits of a standard cylinder, Kitemarked British Standard cylinders also offer extra attack protection, as well as being independently tested by the Master Locksmith Association.

Always look out for the Kitemark logo on cylinder packs and the cylinder itself to ensure the lock meets British Standard.
