ASSA, part of ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions, was the first choice for security on the recently completed £123million Aberdeen3Rs schools project.

Aiming to ‘Reorganise, Renovate and Rebuild’ two academies, eight primary schools and a community sports centre, this project further enhances Aberdeen’s reputation as a ‘city to watch’ for regeneration and economic growth.

ASSA provided a complete security solution for the project, supplying and installing 1800 timber doorsets and associated ironmongery across the development. This included masterkey cylinders, Scanflex handles and signage alongside locks from the company’s best-selling Modular range.

The architect in conjunction with Pihl UK Ltd, the main contractor for the project, specified the ASSA products for the extended 25-year guarantee and whole life costing benefits.

ASSA also helped the project in fulfilling the duties under the Equality Act 2010 (EA), helping specifically to meet with BS8300 and Approved Document M guidelines, by supplying sliding arm cam motion door closers and electromechanical door closers that are easier to open at the beginning of the cycle whilst maintaining closing force. The Electromechanical closers were used within fire escape routes, with hold-open/swing-closed functionality helping to contain a fire while maintaining accessibility.

Other ASSA hardware used on the project included door hardware and finger protection guards that prevent young children seriously hurting themselves.

Jens Bjarne Hansen, Project Director for Pihl UK, said:

“ASSA was the obvious choice for this remarkable project. As well as possessing the capabilities, experience and attention to detail required to deliver a large scale, integrated design solution specifically for education buildings, the outstanding technical properties of ASSA products were also a decisive factor. “With a 25-year guarantee, we are confident that these schools and community buildings are equipped to provide excellent facilities well into the 21st century.”

Allan Thomson, Business Development Manager – Major Projects for ASSA, added:

“In supplying and fitting doorsets and hardware to the Aberdeen3Rs Schools Project we have been involved in one of Scotland’s landmark developments. “The fact that ASSA products were specified to a project of this magnitude further reinforces our commitment to providing high quality door opening solutions within the education sector.”
