UNION and Yale to inherit Chubb locks heritage

Two leading mortice lock and additional security brands, UNION and Yale, will have a boost in 2010 when they inherit product ranges and locking technologies from the famous Chubb Locks brand, which will no longer have a presence in the general lock market after August 2010.

The Chubb range of mortice locks, rim locks and padlocks will migrate to the UNION brand during 2010 and the Chubb additional security products, such as window locks and door chains, will move to become Yale branded products.

The specialist Chubb M3 range will continue to be available under the Medeco brand name which is supplied by Mul-T-Lock.

Following these changes the only Chubb branded locks remaining on the market will be a range of specialist detention locks supplied by Chubb Custodial Services Ltd.

These moves are a consequence of the licence to brand most locks as Chubb coming to an end in August 2010.  Brand owner, UTC, has decided not to renew the 10 year licence signed with ASSA ABLOY, who manufacture locks under the UNION, Yale, Medeco and Mul-T-Lock brands.

The agreement for the Chubb Custodial locks, which is also part of ASSA ABLOY, is covered by a separate 100 year licence and this remains unaffected by the other changes.

ASSA ABLOY is emphasising that it is only the brand name that is changing. The same products, using the same technology will be manufactured in the same way, so whether the products are branded as UNION or Yale they will still be “Chubb at Heart”, as Business Development Director, Paul Browne, explained:

“The Chubb name has a great lock heritage but once we knew we could not renew the licence we started planning how we could retain all the strengths and qualities of Chubb but under new brands.”

“We are fortunate in having probably the best portfolio of lock brands in the world within ASSA ABLOY and, in the UK, both the UNION and Yale names are very popular and well known.”

“UNION has its own long standing traditions and reputation and is celebrated as a “Best of British” brand worldwide. With its technical and trade strengths it was the natural home for the Chubb mortice locks. It then made sense to extend the UNION range further by adding the Chubb rim lock and padlocks.”

“In total the migration of these Chubb products to UNION will boost the size and scale of UNION by over 40% and help to reinforce its position as the leading ‘trade brand.”

“The remaining additional security products in Chubb have a more natural home in Yale, which is by far the world’s most famous lock brand, with over 98% brand recognition. At the same time we have added to Yale’s resources so they can develop and improve their service to locksmiths, as well as supporting their existing OEM and retail customer base.”

“The M3 high security cylinder mechanism is actually made by Medeco but was branded as Chubb for the UK market. This will simply revert to the Medeco brand name and remain available through Mul T Lock, as it is today.”

“Overall, the changes give us the opportunity to strengthen the support we give to our customers and to reinforce the superior quality of the security products and specialist services ASSA ABLOY has on offer.

“However, these changes take place late in 2010 and, in the meantime, the Chubb range is still readily available. Therefore, customers and stockist need take no immediate action. We are simply giving customers as much notice as possible of future changes given the affection they have for the Chubb name.”

“In addition any Chubb branded products “on the shelf” prior to August 2010 can still be sold after that date and we will be supporting the products for many years to come.”
